SwitchMarket's Guide to Mobile Phone Contracts
Should I choose a new or refurbished phone?
Choosing a refurbished phone is one of the easiest ways to secure a cheap mobile phone deal. Refurbished handsets are strictly tested, wiped, and repaired to work like new, often saving you hundreds of pounds over the length of your contract. On SwitchMarket, you can easily filter deals to show 'Refurbished Only' or 'New Only' to find a device that fits your exact budget.
How do upfront costs work?
When comparing mobile phone contracts, you will typically see a monthly cost and an upfront cost. A higher upfront cost usually means a lower monthly bill, and vice versa. When comparing deals on SwitchMarket, we calculate the "Total Cost" (TCC) of the contract for you. This allows you to see exactly what you will pay over the full 12, 24, or 36 months, so you can easily spot the cheapest overall deal regardless of how the upfront cost is structured.
Are the phones locked to a specific network?
Since December 2021, UK law prohibits mobile networks (like EE, O2, Vodafone, and Three) from selling mobile phones locked to their specific network. This means any new handset you get through a SwitchMarket comparison deal will be unlocked. If you decide to switch networks or use a local SIM card while traveling abroad after your contract ends, your phone is ready to go.
What is a Redemption Offer or Cashback deal?
Some deals offered by our third-party retailers (like Fonehouse or Mobiles.co.uk) include cashback. This can be "Automatic Cashback," which is paid directly into your bank account automatically, or "Cashback by Redemption," where you must send your phone bill to the retailer at specific intervals to claim the money back. SwitchMarket allows you to filter out redemption deals if you prefer a simpler, standard monthly contract.
